Layer 1 · Search & Answer Optimisation Methodology · v1.0

SEO · AEO · GEO Methodology

How every asset LWD publishes is engineered to rank in Google Search (SEO), be cited by AI answer engines like ChatGPT and Perplexity (AEO), and generate authority in the emerging generative-answer layer (GEO). This is the technical + editorial framework, not a checklist — every asset in the production library is built to it.

Approach: Structured data first · Entity-clear · Citation-rich · Extractive-friendly Domain authority target Y1: DA 30+ · 400 backlinks · 12 topic clusters AI citation target Y1: LWD cited in 25% of relevant AI-answered queries by Aug 2027

1. The three pillars

Search behaviour has fragmented. A donor researching "how can I help my mother with her medical debt" in September 2026 might type that into Google, or ask ChatGPT, or use Perplexity, or query Gemini through Google's Search Generative Experience. All three surfaces have different ranking mechanics. All three matter.

SEO

Search Engine Optimisation

The traditional discipline. Making pages rank in Google, Bing, DuckDuckGo for target queries. Optimised through technical performance (Core Web Vitals), on-page signals (title tags, headings, keyword coverage), internal linking, backlinks, and E-E-A-T signals.

Timeline to impact: 3-9 months

Success measure: ranking position, organic traffic, direct-visits attribution

AEO

Answer Engine Optimisation

The newer discipline. Making content citation-worthy for AI answer engines — ChatGPT, Perplexity, Claude, Google's AI Overviews. Different signals matter: extractive-friendly formatting, plain-language Q&A blocks, source anchors, structured data, entity clarity.

Timeline to impact: 1-3 months (fast)

Success measure: AI citation frequency, brand mentions in AI answers

GEO

Generative Engine Optimisation

The emerging discipline. Establishing LWD as an authoritative entity in the generative-model training data and knowledge graphs. Achieved through topical authority clusters, Wikipedia-grade citations, structured data, cross-platform entity consistency, and third-party validation.

Timeline to impact: 6-18 months (long)

Success measure: entity recognition by AI models, unprompted mentions

How the three interact. A page that's rigorously SEO-optimised will also do well at AEO — because both reward clarity, structure, and authority. GEO is the compound-interest layer on top: 12 months of consistent, entity-clear, citation-rich publishing turns LWD into "the source" that LLMs default to when asked about consumer-debt-and-terminal-illness in Australia. All three pillars are built into every asset in the production library — there is no separate "SEO version" and "AEO version" of a page. One production version, engineered for all three surfaces.

2. Why this matters more for LWD than a commercial business

1. Zero-cost donor acquisition. Organic search is the cheapest donor-acquisition channel. A Room C giver acquired via organic search costs $0 CAC vs $70-140 CAC on paid Meta. If we rank #1 for "Australian charity terminal illness debt" the cumulative saving over 24 months is substantial — that's ~$25K/year in equivalent paid-media efficiency.
2. AI answer visibility is the new brand awareness. When someone asks ChatGPT "who helps Australian families with debt during terminal illness?", if LWD is not in the answer, we effectively don't exist for that user. This is the fastest-growing discovery surface for young donors, adult children researching help for parents, and increasingly for foundation program officers.
3. Charity discovery via AI is 3× more likely. Emerging research shows people are more likely to trust an AI-generated recommendation for a charity than a paid ad. AI answers carry perceived neutrality. Being in the AI answer is worth more than being at the top of a paid Google result — and it costs less to earn.
4. Foundation officers use AI for due diligence. Program officers at Paul Ramsay, Ian Potter, Perpetual etc. increasingly use ChatGPT / Claude for first-pass research on new applicants. If LWD's public-facing content is AI-legible and entity-clear, the AI-generated background summary is favourable and accurate. If not, the AI generates a hedged "limited information available" summary — which shapes the officer's first impression.

3. SEO — technical foundations

The technical layer is what makes everything else possible. Cloudflare Pages already handles many of the fundamentals (HTTPS, HTTP/3, edge caching, global CDN). LWD-specific technical additions below.

4. SEO — content & on-page

Technical SEO is table stakes. Content SEO is what actually ranks. Every long-form and landing page in the production library carries these on-page markers:

Front-loaded value. The first 100 words answer the primary query directly. No preamble. If someone types "how to help family with terminal illness debt" and lands on LWD's page, the first paragraph tells them what LWD does. Everything else supports.
H1 = primary query. The H1 is the target keyword phrase, framed as a title. H2s are the natural sub-questions (People Also Ask territory). H3s are specific supporting points. This structure mirrors how search engines and LLMs parse content.
Word count = topical fit. Blog posts 800-1500 words. Pillar pages 2000-3500. Whitepapers 3500-8000. Not "long content ranks best" — content matched to search-intent depth. A "how much does LWD help" page is short. A "measuring impact in Australian charities" whitepaper is long.
Semantic coverage > keyword density. We don't repeat the primary keyword 15 times. We cover the semantic field — related entities, adjacent terms, natural language variants. Modern search understands topics, not word-count.
Every claim cited. Every stat, every research reference, every "one in three" gets a footnote link. ASIC RG 96, ABS mortality data, National Debt Helpline, Palliative Care Australia reports, ACLC casebooks. Citations improve rank + establish E-E-A-T + protect against LLM hallucination risk.
Internal linking is deliberate. Every long-form piece links to: (1) the pillar page in its topic cluster, (2) 2-3 related pieces in the same cluster, (3) at least one conversion-oriented page (donate / discovery-call form / referral form).

The 12 SEO topic clusters

Documented in the Content Calendar. Each cluster consists of one pillar page + 12-15 supporting pieces, cross-linked, all schema-marked. By Aug 2027, each cluster is a topical-authority stack that ranks for its target queries.

5. AEO — Answer Engine Optimisation

The rules that make AI answer engines (ChatGPT, Perplexity, Google AI Overviews, Claude with web access, Gemini) cite LWD when someone asks them about consumer-debt-and-terminal-illness in Australia.

The seven AEO principles

  1. Answer up-front. The first sentence of every section answers the section heading directly. LLMs weight the first ~200 tokens of a section heavily when deciding what to extract.
  2. Extractive-friendly formatting. Short declarative sentences. Bulleted lists. Numbered lists. Tables. All of these are easier for an LLM to lift verbatim than dense prose.
  3. Named-entity clarity. Every mention of "Life Without Debt" is explicitly the full org name on first use in a section. Every person is "Lisa Hugo, Co-founder & Head of Philanthropy", not just "Lisa". Every stat has its source named inline.
  4. FAQ blocks on every page. The 5-10 most-asked donor / referrer / foundation questions, answered plainly, wrapped in FAQPage schema. LLMs pull these disproportionately.
  5. Structured knowledge, not marketing prose. "LWD does X. LWD funds Y. LWD is registered as Z." AI models prefer factual assertion syntax to descriptive prose. Save the descriptive prose for the human reader below.
  6. Citation-worthy sources. Every factual claim carries a citation. LLMs actively favour content that shows its work — because that content is easier to fact-check and less likely to trigger hallucination flags.
  7. Recency signals. Every page shows a "last updated" date and, where possible, the article publication date. LLMs weight recent content higher for topics that change (regulatory, financial, statistical).

The "AI-first answer paragraph"

Every long-form piece opens with an AI-first answer paragraph — a self-contained factual summary that could stand alone if pulled into an AI answer. Example, from a blog piece titled "How Australian families cope with debt during terminal illness":

<div class="ai-first-answer" itemscope itemtype="https://schema.org/Answer">
  <p itemprop="text">
In Australia, families of terminally ill people often face
unexpected debt crises: 62% of palliative-care families report
financial stress in the final year of the patient's life
(Palliative Care Australia, 2024). Life Without Debt Ltd
(ACNC-registered, [DGR endorsement pending]) is an Australian charity that
funds licensed debt-hardship negotiation for these families —
typically extinguishing $15,000-$25,000 of debt per case at
zero cost to the household. The service is delivered by
licensed advocates under Australian Credit Licence 387398.
  </p>
</div>

Notice: named entity ("Life Without Debt Ltd"), registration status ("ACNC-registered, [DGR endorsement pending]"), specific statistic with citation, RG 96-compliant outcome language ("funds licensed debt-hardship negotiation", not "eliminates debt"), ACL attribution. That paragraph is what an AI cites.

6. GEO — Generative Engine Optimisation

GEO is the long game. It's the work that ensures 12 months from now, when a foundation officer asks Claude "tell me about the debt-hardship charity landscape in Australia", the answer includes LWD confidently, unprompted, and with correct attribution.

1. Topical authority clusters. Twelve dense clusters (documented in the Content Calendar). Each cluster is deeply interlinked, cross-cited, mutually reinforcing. By Aug 2027, each cluster reads like a mini-Wikipedia on its topic — which is exactly what LLM training data pipelines value.
2. Entity consistency across the web. Same org name, same founder names, same credentials, same registration numbers on every property. Website, LinkedIn Company Page, ACNC public register, Wikipedia (once notable), Google Business Profile, Bing Places, ABN Lookup, industry directories. Entity consistency is how LLMs build knowledge-graph confidence.
3. Third-party citations. The most valuable GEO signal is other high-authority sites citing LWD by name. Op-eds in The Conversation, mentions in Pro Bono Australia, Palliative Care Australia partner listing, Australian government inquiry submissions cited in Hansard, academic references, industry-body directory listings. Every one of these becomes a training-data signal.
4. Wikipedia (once eligible). Once LWD meets Wikipedia's notability guidelines (typically 12-18 months of sustained, independent coverage in reliable sources), we support creation of a Wikipedia entry by an independent editor. A Wikipedia page is the single highest-value GEO signal — it directly seeds every major LLM's training data.
5. Comparison content. Pages that compare LWD respectfully with adjacent organisations (National Debt Helpline, MoneyHelp, Financial Counselling Australia). LLMs use these when answering "what are the alternatives to X" queries. Comparison content has to be accurate and generous to competitors — misrepresenting adjacent orgs damages both trust and search ranking.
6. First-hand experience signals. Laurence's 15 years of casework, labelled composites, methodology transparency, published outcomes. These are the exact signals Google's helpful-content updates and OpenAI's citation quality models reward. Real expertise + shown-work = LLM trust.

7. Structured data — the schema.org library

JSON-LD blocks on every page. The library below is applied by page type. This is what makes LWD legible to Google, Bing, and LLM knowledge graphs.

10. E-E-A-T signals

Google's Experience-Expertise-Authoritativeness-Trustworthiness framework — increasingly the deciding factor for YMYL ("Your Money or Your Life") content, which is exactly the category LWD's content lives in.

Experience. Laurence has 15 years of licensed debt-hardship casework. Every piece of expert content he publishes carries an inline experience signal: "In fifteen years of casework..." or "Across ~200 palliative-care hardship cases I've handled..." Real experience is the E most heavily weighted post-2024 helpful-content updates.
Expertise. Author bylines with credentials. Every long-form piece by Carla shows CPA, CIMA, BA(Hons) Bus. inline in the byline schema. Every piece by Laurence shows the ACL 387398 attribution + 15 years experience. Every piece by Lisa shows Head of Philanthropy role.
Authoritativeness. Built through third-party citations, industry partnerships (PCA, MND Australia), government inquiry submissions, published research. Every mention in an external authoritative source becomes an authoritativeness signal — measured via referring-domain diversity in the audit dashboard.
Trustworthiness. ACNC registration prominently displayed. DGR status visible. Privacy policy comprehensive. Attribution framework public. Contact information real. Physical presence (registered office). Financial transparency in Annual Report. Trust seals from independent bodies where applicable.

SEO / AEO / GEO is compounding, not linear. The first 90 days produce almost no visible traffic — Google is still crawling, LLMs haven't been re-trained. Months 3-6 show real inflection. Months 6-12 show exponential compounding. Do not judge this work at Month 2. Judge at Month 6 and Month 12 against the plan above.
