Superseded in part by Sprint 57 message frame lock. This document (Sprint 49 vintage) remains the internal Room-C campaign brief: calendar, channel breakdown, ownership, governance path. It is not the source of truth for what the appeal says.
The words the appeal will use across all 7 channel surfaces are the ten locked sentences at /christmas-appeal-frame-lock. The public hero landing page implementing those sentences is at /christmas-appeal-hero-2026. The featured tier of the ask ladder is $1,840 = one full case (Y1 audited cost/case), not the $19.25/week reference this brief was built around. Read this brief for operations; read the frame lock for language.
Reconciliation date: Sprint 58, 10 Aug 2026. No text below has been rewritten; the ask-anchor discipline is inherited from the frame lock.
Purpose. Sprint 49 is the campaign that puts the Sprint 48 attribution rails to work. It ships one hero landing page, one 4-email sequence, one Meta pack, one Google Search pack, one 22-day organic calendar, one PR pack, and one auto-stewardship template. Every artefact points at a single ask: recurring weekly giving anchored at $19.25/week — superseded per the banner above by the Sprint 57 frame-lock featured tier of $1,840 = one full case. The ask does not shift by channel; the framing does.
Ownership. AI CMO (strategy + gate governance) · AI copywrite (email + ad) · AI organic socials manager (Lisa-facing daily calendar) · AI paid ads (Meta + Google build) · AI compliance (RG 96 + Privacy Act pre-flight) · Carla (single sign-off 30 Nov EOD before launch).
Governance. 5-gate Marketing Governance Envelope. Funnel weight: Conversion (Story 20 · Trust 40 · Data 40). Best-practice references: M+R Giving Tuesday 2024 report, Blackbaud recurring-giving retention benchmarks, IAB creative standards, GARM brand-safety framework, ASIC RG 96, Privacy Act 1988, FIA Code of Conduct.

The one number that runs Sprint 49. The campaign asks for $19.25 a week — one hour of licensed advocacy per week for a household facing terminal illness. Every ad headline, every email subject line, every donation button leads with $19.25/week. One-off gifts are accepted (the /give hub keeps that path open), but Sprint 49 is a recurring-giving campaign — because the M+R benchmark, the Blackbaud data, and the Y1 audit all say the same thing: recurring is what compounds.
1. The single-ask discipline — why this is not a menu
Most charity Christmas Appeals fail the same way: they ask for everything at once. Weekly, monthly, one-off, gift-in-lieu, ambassador program, workplace giving, bequest, in-memoriam, corporate match — all in one landing page. The donor freezes and closes the tab.
Sprint 49 does the opposite. The hero page asks one thing: $19.25 a week. The other paths still exist (bequest, one-off, in-memoriam) — they live one click away on the /give hub — but the Christmas Appeal itself is single-ask. That is the M+R Giving Tuesday 2024 finding restated: campaigns that lead with a single, specific, recurring ask outperform variable-ask menus by roughly 30-40 % in gift-completion rate at equivalent traffic quality.
Every artefact in Sprint 49 respects this discipline. Meta ads lead $19.25/wk. Google Search ads lead $19.25/wk. Emails lead $19.25/wk. Organic posts lead $19.25/wk. When a variant is A/B tested (e.g., $10/wk vs $19.25/wk), the variant is the number, not the ask type.
What the single-ask discipline does not mean
- Not that one-off gifts are refused. They are accepted at /give and processed through the same /donate pipeline.
- Not that in-memoriam donors are turned away. The in-memoriam gift path spec (Sprint 48) is fully live; Sprint 49 links to it from the hero page's footer trust panel.
- Not that corporate matching is off. It is available but is a separate path (Room B warm-up); Sprint 49 does not spend paid-ad dollars against corporate.
- Not that bequests are hidden. They are on /give and named in the footer, but not the hero ask.
2. Launch calendar — the 30-day timing map
Sprint 49 executes across four calendar windows: build (1–25 Nov), pre-launch tease (28 Nov), Giving Tuesday launch (2 Dec), sustain (3–24 Dec), sunset (25–31 Dec dark). The dates below are hard.
/christmas-appeal · 4 emails scheduled in ESP · Meta campaign paused-and-ready · Google campaign paused-and-ready · organic calendar first post queued.3. Hero landing page — /christmas-appeal
The Christmas Appeal hero page is built to one design principle: a donor should be able to click the primary CTA within four seconds of the page rendering. Everything else is optional.
Above-the-fold structure
- Header eyebrow. “Christmas Appeal 2026 · Life Without Debt” — small, understated.
- H1. “This Christmas, fund one hour a week of licensed advocacy for one Australian household facing terminal illness.” — 21 words. No superlatives. No “you can change lives.”
- Sub-head. “$19.25 a week. 87 cents of every dollar goes to direct household services. Audit-clean Y1 numbers below.”
- Primary CTA button. “Give $19.25 a week” — teal-gold, WCAG 2.2 AA contrast, min 44×44px target. Links to
/donate?plan=weekly&amount=19.25&utm_source={source}&utm_medium={medium}&utm_campaign=christmas-appeal-2026&utm_content={variant}. - Secondary CTA. “Prefer a one-off gift? Choose your amount →” — text link, underlined, links to /give. This is the concession to donors who cannot commit weekly. It is deliberately not a button.
Below-the-fold structure
- Impact panel. Three numbers pulled from Y1 audit: 31 cases resolved · $1.82M debt resolved · 23 days average resolution. Each with a one-sentence gloss.
- Composite story. One story (labelled “composite — drawn from case-pattern research, not one real person”), 140-word maximum, third-person, no first-name-basis intimacy.
- What $19.25 buys. Direct link to /weekly-giving-calculator with pre-set slider at $19.25.
- Compliance envelope. ABN · ACN · ACL 387398 (CMS as licensed operator) · complaints link · privacy link. Server-rendered inline, not iframed.
- Trust panel. DGR status (endorsement pending disclosed honestly) · ACNC registration status · audit-clean Y1 numbers link to /prospectus.
- Alternative gift paths footer. Bequest, in-memoriam, corporate matching — each a one-line link to /give.
Voice discipline. No “debt relief.” No “debt eliminated.” No “clients.” The regulator-safe language is: “may result in reduced or waived debt in some cases,” “licensed advocacy on behalf of the household,” “the household” or “the beneficiary.” This applies to the hero H1, the sub-head, the composite story, the CTAs, and the compliance envelope. See Position Brief §9.
Schema.org markup
Two JSON-LD blocks are emitted server-side: DonateAction (for AEO/GEO discovery in AI-answer engines) and WebPage with speakable (for voice-answer surfaces). The DonateAction block references the /donate landing URL with the recurring price specification and the ACL disclosure text as the termsOfService value.
4. 4-email sequence — sender, subject, ask, evidence, sunset
Four emails. One sender: Carla, from her own real name and inbox. No stock “marketing@” sender. Every email is written to be read on a phone in landscape mode in under 40 seconds.
Full copy is in the sister document /christmas-appeal-email-sequence. This section is the strategic map.
| # | When | Subject line | Ask | Purpose |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Fri 28 Nov 8am | “Something we’d like you to know about $19.25.” | None (soft tease) | Warm the inbox. Set the number. No CTA button — only a link to /prospectus. |
| 2 | Tue 2 Dec 6am (Giving Tuesday) | “The $19.25 promise, opened.” | Weekly $19.25 | The full ask. Composite story. Primary CTA button. Secondary text-link to one-off. |
| 3 | Tue 16 Dec 10am | “A fortnight in: what the numbers say.” | Weekly $19.25 (restated) | Evidence email. Three Y1 numbers, one-line each. Second CTA. No pressure language. |
| 4 | Tue 23 Dec 9am | “24 hours to close the loop.” | Weekly $19.25 (last chance) | Names the sunset explicitly. No fake scarcity — the 24 Dec cutoff is real. |
Universal email rules
- Plain-text first, HTML fall-forward — every email must be readable in text-only clients.
- One CTA button per email (email 1 has none; emails 2, 3, 4 have exactly one).
- Unsubscribe link + privacy link + LWD ABN in every footer.
- Every email carries the ACL 387398 disclosure in the footer, not the body.
- No image-only content — if images fail, the email must still convey the ask.
- Subject lines ≤ 42 characters (mobile-inbox constraint).
- Preview text ≤ 90 characters, written to complement the subject, not duplicate it.
- Sender: Carla, real name, real inbox. Reply-to also her.
5. Meta ad pack — 3 video · 3 still · 1 carousel
Meta is Sprint 49’s largest paid-spend channel by design: Room C’s target audience (working Australians aged 30-55, above-median household income, existing charity-donor behavioural segment) has the strongest Meta match rate.
Creative inventory
- 3 video scripts: 15s (hook-only, single-fact), 30s (composite story), 60s (composite + Y1 numbers + CTA). All scripts stored in /attribution-implementation §3 event dictionary compatibility — video-completion percentages fire the
calc_interact-family events. - 3 still-image concepts with alt-text drafts and design briefs (LWD design does not use stock terminal-illness imagery — the stills are typographic-first, one photograph of hands on a kitchen table used sparingly).
- 1 carousel (5 frames): frame 1 hook, frames 2-4 the three Y1 numbers, frame 5 the CTA.
Placement discipline
- Feed + Reels + Stories — on. Marketplace — off (GARM brand-safety exclusion).
- Audience Network — off for Sprint 49 (attribution noise not worth the reach).
- Instagram Explore — on for Reels only.
- No political-content adjacencies (GARM tier-1 exclusion), no bereavement-content adjacencies (audience sensitivity discipline).
Audience targeting
- Cold audience: Australia · 30-55 · household income top-30% (Meta interest-based approximation) · existing donation-behaviour segment. Cap at 3M reach.
- Warm audience: Custom Audience of website visitors (Sprint 48 first-party cookie population) · 90-day lookback · email list upload with hashed emails.
- Lookalike: 1-3% LAL from converters in the first 7 days of the campaign (built dynamically once the campaign has 100+ conversions).
- Exclusions: existing donors (already-converted — do not re-target with acquisition creative), employees, board.
Compliance envelope
- Every ad carries the ACL 387398 disclosure in the primary text (Meta’s rules require it be visible without click-through).
- No claim of guaranteed outcomes. No before/after imagery. No debt-shame imagery.
- RG 96 language: may result in reduced or waived debt in some cases — verbatim, in body copy of every long-form ad.
6. Google Search pack — 3 ad groups × RSA
Google Search is Sprint 49’s second-largest paid-spend channel. Its role is different from Meta: Search catches intent (donors who have already decided to give somewhere and are researching where). Meta creates intent; Search converts it.
Ad groups
- Brand. Keywords: “life without debt” · “lwd charity” · “cosai life without debt” (near-match variants). Purpose: protect the brand SERP.
- Christmas-giving generic. Keywords: “charity christmas appeal 2026” · “giving tuesday 2026 australia” · “charity to donate to” (broad match with negatives). Purpose: intercept intent-shopping donors.
- Terminal-illness debt. Keywords: “debt help terminal illness” · “charity for people with cancer debt” · “help paying debt while sick.” Purpose: reach beneficiary-search space adjacent to donor-search. RG 96 language is critical here.
Responsive Search Ads (RSA) — per ad group
- 15 headlines (max 30 characters each) rotating around: “$19.25 a week,” “Life Without Debt,” “87 cents to services,” “Licensed advocacy,” “Christmas Appeal 2026,” “Give this Giving Tuesday.”
- 4 descriptions (max 90 characters each) each carrying the ACL 387398 disclosure or the “may result in reduced or waived debt” language.
- Final URL routing: Brand ad group → /christmas-appeal. Christmas-giving generic → /christmas-appeal. Terminal-illness debt → /how-lwd-can-help (beneficiary-facing landing) with a secondary CTA to /christmas-appeal — do not push a beneficiary-search query at a donation ask.
- Negatives: “free,” “debt relief scheme,” “debt elimination,” “debt cancellation” (RG 96), “bankruptcy” (not the LWD scope).
7. Organic social calendar — 22 days, Lisa-led
Lisa runs organic. Her cadence, her voice. The AI-CMO produces the calendar — date, platform, angle, source-material link — but Lisa writes every post in her own words. This is deliberate: paid channels can be typographic and system-voice; organic must be human-voice or it reads as astroturf.
Platform mix
- LinkedIn. Daily post from Lisa. Long-form (200-400 words). Focus: professional network, ESG signalling, donor peer-visibility.
- Instagram. Daily post + 3 Stories per day. Focus: quiet visual language, no emotive imagery, Reels re-cut from the 30-second Meta video.
- Facebook. Daily post — Lisa cross-posts from LinkedIn with a 20% re-write. Focus: older-skewing audience, group-share potential.
Content themes across the 22 days
- Days 1-3 (2-4 Dec): Launch — the $19.25 anchor, the composite story, the CTA.
- Days 4-7: Evidence — each day one Y1 number, one sentence of context.
- Days 8-14: Faces of the work — Lisa in her own voice on why she does this. Laurence in his own voice on why terminal-illness debt is the invisible problem. Never staff photos of beneficiaries.
- Days 15-19: Trust — DGR/ACNC/ACL disclosures, the audit-clean ratio, the licensed-operator model explained plainly.
- Days 20-22 (22-24 Dec): Last-chance — the sunset named honestly, gratitude in advance for the 25 Dec dark week.
No first-name-basis intimacy with beneficiaries. No “Meet Sarah.” No “Kwame’s story.” Every case reference must be labelled composite. This applies to organic as strongly as to paid — probably more so, because organic tends to drift toward intimacy under conversion pressure.
8. PR pack — metro morning-news pitch slot
PR is a lottery ticket in Christmas Appeal work — if a metro morning-news slot picks it up, the campaign transforms; if not, no harm done. Sprint 49 buys the ticket without depending on it winning.
Deliverables (all built by 25 Nov)
- Press release, one page. Angle: “$19.25 a week — the price of an hour of licensed advocacy for an Australian household facing terminal illness.”
- Spokesperson brief for Carla. 5 questions Carla answers verbatim, 3 questions she declines with a scripted courteous no. Includes the RG 96 language boundary.
- B-roll direction. Not b-roll itself — direction. If a broadcaster wants footage, LWD offers: hands on a kitchen table (no faces), a case-file being closed, Carla at a desk (no phone number visible). No stock terminal-illness imagery.
- Target list. 12 metro morning-news producers — ABC, Ch7, Ch9, Ch10, SBS — each named individual, each with pitch email tailored (not template).
Pitch discipline
- Send pitch email 25 Nov (Tue). Follow-up 27 Nov (Thu). Second follow-up 1 Dec (Mon, day before launch).
- If no reply by 2 Dec 6am, do not pitch again for this campaign. Move on.
- If a producer asks for exclusive angle, offer — but Carla decides yes/no within 2 hours to preserve news cycle.
9. Auto-stewardship — the 4-hour thank-you
Sprint 48 shipped the SLA: every gift receives a personalised thank-you email within 4 hours of the donate_success event firing, and a formal receipt within 24 hours. Sprint 49 adds one Christmas-specific stewardship line:
Christmas Appeal thank-you addendum. Emails sent to donors between 2 Dec and 24 Dec carry an extra final paragraph: “Your gift will fund advocacy through the first quarter of 2027. In April, you’ll receive your first quarterly impact update — one composite story, three numbers, no marketing.” This sets up Sprint 51 (retention infrastructure) cleanly.
Stewardship acceptance
- 4-hour SLA measured from
donate_successevent to email delivery timestamp. Median target: < 90 minutes. - Every thank-you is signed by Carla, personally, using merge-fields (First name · gift amount · gift frequency).
- Tax receipt sent within 24 hours from a separate transactional address, per Privacy Act 1988 record-keeping.
- No follow-up ask for 30 days after any gift. Silence is the reward for giving.
10. Attribution wiring — UTM taxonomy for Sprint 49
Sprint 48 shipped the taxonomy. Sprint 49 uses it. Every ad, every email, every organic post decorates its outbound link per the 5-parameter controlled vocabulary specified in /attribution-implementation §2.
| Parameter | Sprint 49 values | Notes |
|---|---|---|
utm_source | meta · google · linkedin · instagram · facebook · email · pr · organic-lisa | Enum — unknown values rejected server-side. |
utm_medium | cpc · social-paid · social-organic · email · earned | IAB canonical values. |
utm_campaign | christmas-appeal-2026-202612 | Format: <campaign>-<YYYYMM>. Single value for all Sprint 49 spend. |
utm_content | video-15s · video-30s · video-60s · still-hands · still-typographic · carousel · email-1-tease · email-2-launch · email-3-evidence · email-4-lastchance · organic-linkedin · organic-instagram · organic-facebook | Creative variant — feeds into A/B rotation. |
utm_term | (Google Search ad-group id) · (Meta audience segment id) · (blank on email/organic) | Machine-generated; not manually authored. |
The primary CTA on /christmas-appeal passes the visitor’s inbound UTM stack through to /donate via the first-party lwd_session cookie (Sprint 48). No UTM re-injection on the client. The donate_success server-side event carries the first-touch and last-touch UTM from the session.
11. Compliance envelope — RG 96 in every ad, every email
The failure mode Sprint 49 must not enter is regulator language slippage under conversion pressure. Every ad and every email must pass this pre-flight before it ships:
The pre-flight checklist.
- Does the asset use the phrase “debt relief”? → Fail. Replace with “debt-hardship advocacy” or “licensed mediation.”
- Does the asset claim “we eliminate debt” or “we clear your debt”? → Fail. Replace with “may result in reduced or waived debt in some cases.”
- Does the asset use “clients”? → Fail. Use “beneficiaries,” “the household,” or “the person we’re working alongside.”
- Does the asset disclose ACL 387398 on the visible landing surface? → If no, Fail.
- Does the asset disclose the DGR-endorsement-pending status if it discusses tax-deductibility? → If no, Fail.
- Does the asset use a photograph of an identifiable beneficiary? → Fail. Composite only, with labelling.
- Does the asset carry an unsubscribe link (if email) or a privacy statement link (if page)? → If no, Fail.
- Is the language reading grade ≤ 8 (beneficiary-facing) or ≤ 12 (donor-facing)? → If no, Fail.
Every asset ships with an artefact-specific line on /christmas-appeal-brief §3 acceptance matrix. No asset passes gate G2 without every line green.
12. Sunset discipline — the 24 Dec 5pm cliff
The Christmas Appeal ends at 5pm on 24 December. This is the honesty of the campaign: no last-second push, no fake “final hour” on Christmas Day, no email on Boxing Day. The sunset is real and it is respected.
What happens at sunset
- 5pm 24 Dec. Meta campaign paused (not deleted — retained for retro reporting). Google campaign paused. Instagram / Facebook / LinkedIn ad-set schedules end.
- By 6pm 24 Dec. Landing page swapped to a thank-you variant: “The Christmas Appeal has closed for 2026. Every gift is being processed and stewarded. Thank you.” The /give hub remains fully live (donations always accepted).
- 25 Dec → 31 Dec. Complete dark. No email sends. No paid spend. No organic posts. Auto-stewardship still fires on any late gift landing in the /donate pipeline.
- 1 Jan 2027. A single thank-you-of-the-year email from Carla to all donors who gave during the campaign. No ask, no CTA button — just gratitude and one sentence about what happens next.
Why the sunset matters. The M+R Giving Tuesday report and the Blackbaud retention benchmarks agree: campaigns that respect quiet windows have higher year-two retention than campaigns that keep pushing through Christmas Day. Silence at Christmas is not a lost opportunity — it is a trust signal. Donors remember the charity that did not email them on Boxing Day.
